"I took a leave of absence to write my fIrst book," Brashares recalls. While Brashares had been working for the company that became Alloy, which packages such series as " Sweet Valley High," she decided to take a break to write a book under her own name and auspices. "Sisterhood" was a step up in terms of a young adult series. Life can be treacherous, but the girls have each other. The summer will bring challenges to each, and at its end the pants will become the symbol of their friendship. The girls make a pact to send the magical jeans to each other on their far-flung vacation destinations. Unbelievably, they fit each other perfectly. One purchases a pair of thrift-store jeans just before parting. The original "Sisterhood" series followed the quartet as they separate for their sophomore summer. Ann Brashares has written another in the series, "Sisterhood Everlasting," and one of the four girls doesn't survive. Be warned, you many fans of " The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants." It's gonna hurt.
